The Head Coach for the Fort Wayne Flite, Roderick Wilmont, signed a contract to play with the London Lightning of NBL-Canada, team officials announced this afternoon. The former Indiana Hoosier had just completed his first season of coaching with the Flite, leading them to a 6-4 regular season record and a post-season berth in their inaugural season.
Despite entering the coaching ranks in the Central Basketball Association, Wilmont still believed he could play and contribute on the court, and the Lightning coaching staff agreed to that feeling as well, as evidenced through their negotiations over the last couple of weeks, culminating with today's signing.
The 6-foot-4 Wilmont played four seasons at Indiana University from 2003 to 2007, where he averaged 12.6 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game his senior year. After attending training camp for the New York Knicks after graduating college, Wilmont eventually landed on the roster for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League. In his four seasons with the Mad Ants from 2007 to 2011, Wilmont played 144 games, and averaged nearly 12 points per game. The 31-year old has also played professional basketball overseas during his career, including stints in Turkey, Italy, Iceland, and Sweden.
With the signing of Wilmont by the Lightning, he becomes the second player this week to be picked up by an NBL-Canada team, joining John Paul Nyadaro (Bowling Green Hornets) who was a second round draft pick this past Sunday by the Saint John Mill Rats. Wilmont also becomes the 11th individual associated with the Central Basketball Association to sign overseas, the fifth to play in NBL-Canada, and the first to come from the Fort Wayne Flite organization.
