With the first overall pick in the 2017 NBL-Canada Draft, the expansion club, St. John's Edge, selected Fort Wayne Flite's Aaron Williams.

The 6-foot-6 forward played the first two games of the 2017 season for Fort Wayne, before moving on to play in China. Williams, who played collegiately at Chicago State University had his best game against Baltimore in April, with a 4-point, 4-rebound performance off the bench to help mount a comeback for the defending champions against the Shuckers.

Williams becomes the first CBA player to be drafted number one overall north of the border. He also becomes the second CBA player to be drafted in the first round of the annual Canadian draft, joining Bowling Green's Fred Sturdivant, who was selected fifth overall in 2016.

Williams was not the only Fort Wayne player to be selected in this year's draft, as his CBA teammate, James Johnson, was selected by the Windsor Express in the second round. The 6-foot-5 guard played in eight games with Fort Wayne in 2017 averaging 4.2 points per game off the bench. Johnson will make his third consecutive trip overseas, as he signed in Spain after the 2015 CBA season, and in Canada after the 2016 season.
