With the eighth pick in the second round of the 2017 Baloncesto Superior Nacional Draft in Puerto Rico, Atleticos de San German selected 6-foot-3 guard, Marcus Smith, from the Indianapolis Blaze.

Athletics de San German is currently the most successful club in Puerto Rico basketball history, with 14 national titles in 25 championship game appearances. Their first league trophy was hoisted in 1932, and their last championship title was 20 years ago, in 1997.

Smith, who played collegiately at Dakota State University, played in 10 games last year with Indianapolis, averaging 6.6 points per game. His best performance of the year came at Fort Wayne early in the 2016 CBA season, where he scored 19 points, via 9-for-15 shooting, along with 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Smith finished the season fifth on the team in scoring, and fourth in steals. He becomes the second player from the Indianapolis organization to play overseas, joining Yuri Leath, who played in Taiwan last fall.

Through this international opportunity for Smith, the Central Basketball Association has now provided 169 players a chance to compete on international soil. With the commencement of the 2017 CBA season in less than four weeks, a new class of league players will be set to join the success of league alumni.
